10 sights and attractions in the area of ISSM2020

You’re coming to the Netherlands in June especially for the ISSM congress, but while you’re here you’ll probably want to see more of the country. Good news: during the conference days you’ll have plenty of free time. Below we have listed 10 sights and attractions for you. Some are major attractions and some are smaller characteristically Dutch sights. They are listed in random order and all are within a relatively short distance of the conference venue in Ermelo.


1 – Dolfinarium

Where? Zuiderzeeboulevard 22 in Harderwijk (7 kilometers from the conference venue)

Why? Dolfinarium is the largest marine mammal park in Europe. This makes your visit to ISSM a great opportunity to get an up-close look at seals, dolphins, walruses, porpoises, sea lions, rays and sharks .


2 – Burg Bieren beer brewery

Where? Putterweg 45 in Ermelo (2 kilometers from the conference venue – 15 minutes’ walk)

Why? Curious about Dutch beers? Then visit this brewery, café and beer shop all in one. Different local beers are brewed in the brewery, which you can check out during a tour. In the cafe you can order more than 3,000 different beers.


3 – Windmill ‘The Cow’

Where? Molenaarsplein 26 in Ermelo (2 kilometers from the conference venue – 15 minutes’ walk)

Why? You can view this typical Dutch windmill that has been in Ermelo for over 600 years. It functioned as a flour mill. On some days a tour is possible, and the guide shows and explains the technology of the mill.


4 – Ermelo City

Where? 2 kilometers from the conference venue – 15 minutes’ walk

Why? Ermelo is a small town in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It has almost 27,000 inhabitants. The cozy center has many dozens of shops you can visit and plenty of restaurants for something to eat or drink.


5 – Cycle through nature reserve ‘De Veluwe’

Where? Right next to Ermelo, all around the conference venue.

Why? This is the best way to discover the area in a traditional Dutch manner. Cycle through the nature reserve “De Veluwe” or over the “Ermelosche Heide”. You can rent a bicycle at the conference venue.


6 – City Museum Harderwijk

Where? Donkerstraat 4 in Harderwijk (5.5 kilometers from the conference venue)

Why? This is the city museum of Harderwijk, located next to Ermelo. The museum contains around 9,000 objects and 26,000 photos about the history of the area.


7 – Sand sculpture event

Where? Oude Barnevelderweg 5 in Garderen (14 kilometers from the conference venue)

Why? This is the largest sand sculpture event in the Netherlands. Marvel at the impressive sand creations both outside and in the covered area.


8 – Sheepfold

Where? Postweg 50 in Ermelo (5 kilometers from the conference venue)

Why? The sheepfold is the basis for the hundreds of sheep that maintain the Ermelosche Heide. This is a cultural-historical tradition that is kept alive. In the visitor center you can find a great deal of information about the sheep, shepherds and dogs, as well as the bees and nature in the area.


9 – Aviodrome Aviation Museum

Where? Pelikaanweg 50 in Lelystad (23 kilometers from the conference venue)

Why? Aviodrome Aviation Museum is the biggest Dutch museum for aerospace.

Experience Dutch aviation and see the unique collection of over 100 aircraft.


10 – Relax at the conference venue

Where? In the conference venue

Why? Don’t feel like going far away? You don’t have to. The hotel offers a lot of ways to relax. You can enjoy the indoor swimming pool, a Finish sauna, a whirlpool, and a Turkish steam bath.
